Outdoor Ceiling Fan - Surface Mounted Electrical Box
    Hi!

I'm connecting a Hampton Bay "Nassau" ceiling fan to a surface-mounted (not recessed) electrical box outside in the backyard arbor. The standard 4" electrical box is mounted to the bottom of a thick joist with the wires running through the joist itself.

However, the canopy sems to have a diameter at the top of about 6 1/2". Consequently, there is about 1 1/4" of open space at the top of the canopy. I'm a little worried that rain could get in there and wreak havoc with the wiring (the arbor isn't completely covered).

Has anyone else come across this problem? I'm wondering if anyone makes a "canopy cover" which could be used? Or a small medallion of some sort? Any advice would be appreciated!

I'm sure it is very rare to have an outdoor fan mounted to a surface box. You may have to make some sort of seal for it, presuming it was a recessed box, to do what the ceiling would do.
