    Unmarried parents - father's rights?
I do not want my baby's father involved with her and I want to offer him a cash settlement to relinquish his rights? Is this something I can do in North Carolina? If he agrees, will the judge allow this? We are not married.

I don't know if you can offer him a cash settlement to relinquish his rights, but you will just have to get him to agree to do so.

What does the father want? Is his name on the birth certificate? I'm totally biased on my beliefs about a father's role... but I also know not all men share my ideas.

As for the rest, I don't have any answers... but took notice of how offering money to a guy to get him out of the picture seemed to be the answer... what about all the child support he wouldn't have to pay? That is a big financial incentive for a lot of people...

Also, it does seem to me more than just a little tacky and insulting that people offer money to guys to get them to go away... I know it happens often though... I once had a girlfriend whose father offered the money for me to go away... but it didn't work... guess he thought I only wanted her for his $... Really pretty insulting that he couldn't see his daughters worth to others over his precious cash and couldn't understand someone wanting her rather than his wealth... He thought he was protecting her maybe from some guy that only wanted to get to him through her... Guess I passed his test when he asked me how much money I would take to never talk to her again, and I said there wasn't enough money in the world to make me pass on one day with her.

I don't know the guy involved or your reasons for wanting him gone so I'm not passing any judgements on you... Only you can decide what kind of guy you think he is and what influence he would have on the child...

Sounds like you have some assets, so I'd suggest calling a local attorney who handles family issues with the same questions... They would be more familiar with the judges in your area, and could at least tell you over the phone if those things can be done in your area...

    Hello eak:

I'll bet you can. However, you can't do this by yourself. You'll need an attorney.

If the father wants to be involved with the child there is not way to stop him.
He will have to sue in court and get a court ordere DNA test to have his rights. I doubt that any court will agree to take away his rights, Also if he merely signs away his right you can still go after child support, so it would be stupid for him to do this

Unless you have someone waiting to adopt the child in his place, I will almost promise you a judge will not approve this.
