Discussted ,why must I pay to find my family?
I realize closed adoptions are closed but I got a letter day from my adoption agency stating that my birthfathers name is in my records and in order to get the info I must pay. That is worse than a slap in the face.Im reading on this paper that they do know what his name is,but have to pay to get the info that is just sitting right in front of their face not doing them any kind of good.Closed is closed but if this is can they offer me this info as long as I pay? I wonder what right they have to keep this information from me yet sell it at the drop of a dime. This is a very emotional process.. Im a single mom and can't afford to pay what they ask... so it seems like I have 2 choices... pay to find my biological family or wonder for the rest of my life. I was adopted in Florida.Any advice??

Who has the info a private adoption firm or a state agency? Did they explain the need for the fee? Since it's a closed adoption, they may need to get a court order to open the records.

There are a number of support sites for adoptees that may be able to help you.

Have you been actively searching? If so, I would think this may be a scam.

So don't pay and move on with your life, you were adopted, be happy with the parents God provided you with though the adoption.

There is normally nothing worth finding after you spend years looking.

Next if you did register on many web sites and areas, there are 100's of scams out there trying to get your money from you for searches.

Since real closed records will not provide it for money, (* unless you bribe someone)

Please keep follow-up question in the same thread.

Its possible the agency will contact him and forward your contact info giving him the choice. You have to ask the agency.

It is not a scam. Catholic Family Services here (ND) requires the adoptee and the biological parents to pay, in the area of $800.00, to release information. That is for a closed adoption. Now they will, for nothing keep the names on file and should either the child or one of the parents inquire, they can say that yes, there has been contact. Some help! Whoever is looking still has to pay!

Sealed is sealed. PERIOD. (.) (.) so, if they are truly offering this information for a fee or even for free, they are in violation of law.

If the agency being asked to do the search, is the agency that handled the adoption, there is no violation of the law. Catholic Family Services only handles such requests if the original adoption was in their care. They do not handle adoption and adoption searches outside their own agency.
