Banging noise when water pump comes on/off
We live on a well. Recently, there is a banging noise that occurs when the water pump comes on. The pump is in the well and the noise happens because the incoming pipe moves violently when the pumps cuts in and when it cuts out. We have lived at the house for 6 years and this just started. I need to room some of the basement ceiling to get to the section that bangs. Do you think the problem is because the pipe fastener (in that area) has broken or come lose? Or is there something less obvious?

    Cheers

Sounds like the fasteners or pipe restraints to me. There will be some motion in the piping if it is not restrained properly.

Sounds like you could use a air chamber,(shock arrester) on the discharge side of the pump and for petes sake strap and secure those loose pipes. Cut in a tee on the discharge side of nthe pump and install a 12" piece of pipe with a hard cap. This will cushion any shock that the pump produces. Good luck, Tom
