It depends on the full circumstances. But it probably would not be illegal
Yes, it can happen. What were the circumstances surrounding this demotion and pay cut? Did this only happen to you?
It happened to a friend of mine. She couldn't preform superviser position so they demoted her and took her raise away. Thank You
Thank for filling in the bare spots. Yes, the employer has the right to do that. She was promoted and then was not able to fulfill her duties, so she was demoted and her pay was cut. That is fair treatment. Unless there is anything else that happened that she is not telling you.
That's not unusual and definitely not illegal. In fact she is lucky they didn't fire her. Very often in such circumstances, the old job was already filled and no place to put her. Or the company doesn't want to deal with the resentment of a demoted employee and will fire them rather than demote. So tell your friend to be thankful she still has a job.
