I have been trying to conceive for the past 2 months. This past month my "period" was 5 days early, 1 day long (brownish and very light), and followed by 4 days of brown discharge when I wipe (sorry to be graphic). I expected my period today and took a pregnancy test which was negative. I'm not really sure what is going on so any suggestions would really help.

You need to wait at least a week after your missed period to take another test using first morning urine. There is no way we can help you without a complete history and physical exam.

I agree with J_9, wait a week before the pregnancy test. Also, when you use it, use it first thing in the morning, as it is more likely to be accurate at this time. If your menstrual cycle has changed and is worrying you, get checked out by a doctor just to be on the safe side. There could be many causes for what you have described. If you have not been getting regular pap tests and OB-GYN exams, this would be a good time to start. If you have been, I would get it checked out anyway just so you don't worry. I had the brown discharge thing too, and in my case, it turned out to be nothing. But, if I hadn't gotten checked out, I would probably still be stressing over it! If money is an issue, see if there are any clinics for the uninsured. There is one in my county, and all you have to do is show them an ID card proving you live in that county. The treatment is free, and if other tests/treatments are needed, they put you in touch with doctors/organizations that can help you with the costs.
