    Bad pressure switch?
I have been having some problems with my water/well system. It started with reduced water pressure that would surge a bit as the pump turned on and off. We started losing water altogether and I found that if I moved the wire leading to/from the pressure switch(square D, 30/50) then the system would start working again.

Yesterday afternoon after I performed said fix, and the water pressure returned very strong... more than usual. Last night I heard a high pitched squeal and went under the house to find the pressure between 90 and 100, and the relief/safety valve was releasing water. Now when I turn it back on, the pressure continues to build until it trips the safety valve... spewing water under my house.

Also, the inside of the pressure switch cover is somewhat blackened.

Is this a simple matter of replacing the pressure switch? How can I be sure?

    Thanks
