I bought a shih tzu puppy at 9 weeks old and a few days after we got him we noticed he had worms.He was not wormed or needled from this place we got him :( anyway We have had him needled once and wormed twice and he is throwing up worms and they are still in his poo and the worst part is they are now coming out of his butt!! HOW SiCK:(
I need to know how long until he will be done with this it is so gross and I have 2 small kids in the house.I don't even want to let him out of his crate.I think it's tape worms.He needs to go to the vet for his 2nd needle but these worms just won't go away!

Unfortunately worms in pups and kittens can be a real problem for your pup and you.

It is very important that they are wormed regularly. The treatment should be obtained from your vet (as you are doing) as the worming medications they provide are much more effective and in my opinion much safer.

At 9 weeks your pup is still developing internally and it is far more advisable to put the welfare of him in the hands of the vet, rather than relying on over the counter remedies.

Your vet will take into consideration the age, weight and severity of the problem before providing the medication.

It is important to try to make sure the worms are killed off before they can fully develop in the pups gut.

Even when your pet reaches adulthood it is important that he is 'wormed' on a regular basis.

See your vet and tell him how severe you think the problem is. He will be able to check if the infestation is more than normal and may even decide to change the treatment.

I am sure your pups problem can be sorted out with the correct treatment.

Keep working with the vet. Since the puppy was not wormed earlier like it should have been, it may take a couple of weeks to clear up. It is possible worms are a bigger problem for smaller dogs. And take longer ot clear up. Once cleared up, you shouldn't need to do routine wormings unless you dog is exposed to poorly cared for ones.

Ask the vet what kind of worms it is. I know ring worm can be transmitted to children. It would be tough making sure the wash their hands before getting them in their mouth after touching the puppy. Clean up the puppy's stools quickly even outside and dispose of them. Then wash your hands.

The worms are short like rice and they do look like they may be dead now,but I didn't think they would be coming out of his butt if they were dead.He looks scruffy and lean not like my other pup that is fine.I have had him to the vet for the vomiting and worm problem but they just gave him a pill for upset stomach.They did worm him but told me to wait 10 more days to do it again.My concern is that he has been wormed twice and these worms seem to be living through it some how.He has so many that when he had a accident in the house there were worms everywhere in his poo and even on the floor:( I love my little guy and I'm scared that something will happen to him,he don't look well and his coat is dull and gross looking.Is it normal for a dog to be wormed this many times and still have worms?

When I got my little guy Lennox... he was horribly infested with worms. He had a potbelly, and dull coat, and was very lethargic. We had to treat him intensively for almost 2 months before they were completely gone. He too, had started to vomit them as well.

The reason it may be taking awhile for them to be completely gone (as this is what my vet told me)... the worm medicine kills the worms, but most of the time there are unhatched eggs that later hatch. That is why you have to stay consistent with treatments to make sure they are all gone, worms and eggs.

It is important that you dispose of the puppys bowel movements asap. Your puppy, as well as your other dog can get reinfested from the comtaminated poo.

Just give lots of love... as he is probably not feeling very well.

Thanks Michelle,That makes me feel so much better to know that he will get better and someone had the same problem.He has another appointment Friday to be wormed again so maybe this will take care of what's left of them.The poor little guy.How long until his coat looks better? He looks so scruffy and gross right now.He has a white bed in his crate and I can't tell if there are worms on it,what should I do with this bed? Thanks everyone!!

If the bed is washable, or at least its cover, wash it a couple of times a week. If not, pitch it.

It took Lennox awhile until he started being a "puppy"... the worms took a toll on him :( But once the worms seemed to be gone his coat got shiny and he perked right up and started acting like a puppy :)
It just takes times, things like this are hard on a puppy... but with the proper treatment, your little guy should be better soon :)

And as labman said... if you can't wash the bedding I would pitch it.
