Otherwise I do not know why you would have brown gums. Is there a disorder of sorts that causes that? I know that a few of my African American friends have brown gums...

Dark gums are very normal for black/brown and even light brown people - they can also be inherited through genes. If this is your case: Do not worry about it - unless your gum isn't soar - if it isn't, you should contact your dentist.

If it is a pigmentation issue and you are feeling uncomfortable with it, don't worry, it is treatable and it is a simple procedure that doesn't take much time: You should go to the dentist.

Are your gums turning black near teeth that have had silver fillings? If you have had silver fillings (amalgam) you may have amalgam tatoos. Other than that, I have no idea why your tissues would be turning black. I'd suggest you see a dentist.

Caucasian people typically have gums (gingiva) a healthy pink color. If they are puffy and red or even purplish, they have gingivitis - inflammation of the gums - and that's not healthy. African Americans can have any range of pink, to purple, to almost black gums and often be perfectly healthy.

Hi I just saw this -- and I was recently treated for this with gum bleaching

You you should contact a specialist who can help treat it... gum specialists or periodontists can help (but most of them don't treat pigmented gums ) -- I had my gums treated by Dr Farnoosh and it really helps me feel more comfortable smiling... he basically invented the procedure and was published extensively for it... I liked him he was very compassionate and it didn't hurt at all. He treats lots of celebrities in beverly hills...
