    Tons vs yards
What is the tons vs yards conversion

We are weighing dirt and shell that is being trucked out

Do you know both conversions? If so can you fill me in?

Depends on what you are converting. There is a formula for volume and one for weight

I found one reference that says dirt weighs about 125 pounds per cubic foot - that's 1. 69 tons/cubic yard. But another says 2500 pounds/yard, which is 1.25 tons. I suppose it depends on the particular makeup of the dirt in question. I don't know about the weight of shell.

Tons and yards are incompatible units. A ton is weight but cubic yards are volume. If you want to know the volume why not measure the volume instead of the weight?

I had to do this conversion for gravel delivery for my driveway.

It is different for every substance because of density of the material and how high you will want the material to be packed on the site to be covered. For example, there's sand, but you must be specific, such as "wet packed sand" or "dry loose sand". Will the sand be an inch thick or five inches thick?

You order the gravel in tons, not cubic yards?

57's weigh approximately 1.185 tons per cubic yard. That is the conversion. What else do you need?
