    Pay rate
Is it against the law for a job to lower a workers pay rate

Not unless they are under a contract or the change is discriminatory.

Many workers operate under a contract with management where the pay rates are detailed under the contract. This is usually in union shops. That you had to ask indicates you are not covered like that.

I don't think Walmart is unionized. So unless you signed an employment contract, then they can reduce your pay.

How is that possible for an example I get hired for $9 and a month later its $8.50 that s not illegeal

No its not. Unless you received a contract that stated you would be paid $9 for a period of x months, the employer can lower wages. Happens all the time. Would you prefer they continue to pay $9 but cut the workforce (meaning you as a new employee might be the first to be cut)?

But there is nothing illegal about cutting pay as long as its done impartially. For example, they can't cut woman's salaries and leave the men's the same.

    Hello nt:

They can't do it unilaterally either. IF they do it, YOU have to agree. IF they hired you at $9, then paid you less, that is illegal. It's probably a mistake, though. Did you ask them about it?

Just to clarify, what excon is saying, they can't just all of a sudden cut your pay. They have to inform you in advance that they are planning on doing it. You then have a choice of accepting the cut or quitting. I believe you can quit in this case and still be eligible for unemployment.
