are [-b + (b^2 - 4ac)^1/2]/2a and [-b - (b^2 - 4ac)^1/2]/2a
I think your confusion may arise because both roots are complex numbers.
So remember that the square root of a negative number is imaginary, e.g.
(100)^-1/2 = I (100)^1/2 = 10 I
where I = square root of (-1)
