After a recent, HP recommended, firmware update my HP7410 keeps rebooting during its startup cycle. This has rendered the printer inoperable. HP support tried but could not provide any solution to this problem. Does anyone have a solution to this problem or know a why to get the printer into some sort of diagnostic mode so that I can try and reload the firmware. The printer is just out of warranty (of course). HP suggested I purchase the latest model at about $400. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regardless of HP's position that the printer is out of warranty, have them prove to you that their code did not cause the failure you are experiencing. It your position that the code you received from HP has a bug that crippled your printer. If level one doesn't like that as for management and when you get them, find out how HP intends to correct the problem they created for you.

What happens if you disconnect the communications link between the printer and PC. Does the printer keep repeating the POR cycle? Check that the print head is not binding. Open the cover like you are going to change the cartridges and then turn the power off.

Does the print head restore or stay in the middle? When the power is turned back on, the print head restore to the side frame?

Another spot to check is the optics light package under the glass. Power the printer on and then open the cover and look at the light package and see if it is chattering against the end of the frame. If it is, then you need a new overdrive sensor or timing block code change.

I will try to get to support management. With respect to the other things you asked me to check.
Disconnecting the comms links makes no difference.
There is no movement of any of the mechanical components of the printer during the cycling. None of the internal components move when the unit is opened to access the print heads.

The only way to power the unit off is to pull the power plug.

This unit has been superseded by a new model, and I have learnt HP basically turns its back on discontinued models.

Thanks any other ideas are welcomed. Do you happen to know if it is possible to get a preprogrammed firmware module for HP printers and the 7410 specifically?

I am experiencing the same problem with my 7410. Only difference is my printer is almost 4 years old and has been extremel reliable- i hate to replace it if there is a quick fix. I have tried unplugging it for a few minutes then powering up again but no response so far. Thanks
