The search will turn up many confusing references to cases that don't apply plus some bad advice. I hope your puppy is at least 6 weeks old. Did you get any record of shots or were even told if it had any? If it hasn't had any shots, or has been 2-3 weeks since the last, get it into a vet right away for shots and a check up. Follow the vet's recommendations on fleas. They have the safest and most effective remedies. A good start would be Ovitrol or another egg killing spray to clear up the fleas on the puppy and the ones in the house and their eggs. Then put the puppy on one of the many modern remedies such as Revolution or Advantage. Each vet has their own preference, best go along with it unless you find a kook that suggests bathing it in dish soap. In that case, find a vet more in tune with the mainstream.

You do want to act fast on the fleas. Give them a chance, and they become established in your house and can be difficult to clear out. You may need to treat any car the puppy rode in too.
