    Whirpool Washer will not spin
Help. My washer will drain and agitate, but will not spin. I took the machine a part and the coupler looks almost new. The metal ring with the white pads looks a little worn. Could this be the problem or is it something else? Please help.

Hi! You have a bad lid switch.

I do not think it is the lid switch. The motor will run when the lid switch is pushed down and it stops when it is in the up position. I can hear and see the motor shaft spinning.

Your initial description did not state you heard the motor running during the spin I diagnosed based on that information.
    Try these tests and inspections.
Grasp the bottom of the agitator and turn. This turns the transmission shaft manually if it turns both directions the transmision has failed. You can either purchase and install a new one (about $100) or if you are feeling mechanical you can replace the neutral drain kit in your transmission for about $30. If it doesn't turn both ways check your clutch on top of the transmission and the actuator on the basketdrive.

Thanks for the tips. I took everything apart again as a last gasp effort. Found the clutch pads looked worn. Cleaned and scratched up with sand paper. Also found why the clutch pads were worn... one of the kids socks was stuck between the basket and the outer drain tub. Pulled out sock and put everything back together. I added a couple of washers between the spring on the clutch ring to spread it out and add more pressure. Everything seems to work... YEA!! Thanks again.
