Can you tell by looking at the heating element weather its bad or not? Or do you need to test it somehow?

You need to test it you will need an ohm meter first unplug your appliance then gain access to your element take the two leads off and put your test leads from meter on the terminals if it shows resistance usually low no more than 50 the element is good. If no reading then it is bad.
