It has been a year that we had lived in our home and last night I was in the basement (unfinished-soon to be finished) and I was doing laudry and noticed my son (7) had been in the bathroom upstairs and flushed the toilet. I really didn't have to ask (but I did) but the smell coming from the pipe... well lets just say I know he went #2.Is that normal?I am use to finished basements and I am so afraid that this is going to be a problem. I was told that it's normal. Is it though?Please help.Thank you!

No, This isn't normal. I can tell you what's happening and where to start looking but you're going to hafta do the searching. When sonny flushed the discharge went down into the main. Even on a clear drainage system this will produce a small amount of back pressure. If you have a floor drainj or basement fixture that isn't in use the trap seal might have evaporated allowing a puff of sewer gas to enter your basement. Check all the traps in the basement and fill them if necessary. Good luck, Tom

Tom,I just called my husband to let him know and he is not sure what you mean by the trap. Is it the trap (he thinks) at the washer basin? He thinks that's where it was coming from. We were standing in that area... I thought it was the pipe itself. He would like to know the first step and would come on tomorrow to see if he is doing it the right way or he will have to call a plumber.Is this something hecan do himself?He's pretty good at fixing things.

All your fixtures have traps. I was thinking about the floor drain which is often overlooked. Let's not spend the money on a plumber just yet. Your hubby can do evgerything a plumber will do to locate the smell. Have him contact me here. Regards, Toim
