I have a cat that is having some skin problems. He appears to have dandruff very bad and also has black flecks of something mixed in. He even cries whenever we touch him on his back.

When we adopted him, he did have evidence of fleas and the vet treated him with Frontline. After that he was still infected so we tried shampooes and powders but nothing seems to have worked if these black flecks we see are tied to fleas.

My other cats seem fine. We don't have any in our home that I can find either. My husband and I are not getting bitten either.

It has gotten to the point where we are seriously considering having him put down. He has become a loner, preferring to lay somewhere by himself and not with us or the other cats. Any suggestions?:(

Please take him back to the vet , he may have a fungal infection that can be cleared up with antibiotic. Animals will some time get infected skin, when they have fleas, this may have not been full blown when he visited the vet, but has progressed since, making it visible to the eye.

Becareful of the powders and treatments like frontline that are suppose to be remedies they use poison to kill the cats enemy, but its poison to the cat too the cat can have serious allergy on fur, skin and internal, organ failure.

UPDATE

We did speak to a vet who says that she thinks it is an allergy to the fleas. We are going to bathe him using Dawn dishwashing liquid and hope that after a couple of baths, he will be feeling much better.

We found out about how effective Dawn is at killing fleas when we got two kittens from a gal and they were infested too.

Now... to bathe him without getting bitten or scratched! I don't mind getting soaked but the last time he bit me I had to get antibiotics to treat the infection that developed! Poor baby... sitting here sleeping innocently.. totally unaware what awaits him! LOL I just hope it works!

The problem comes in when things like Frontline are bought online somewhere or from someone not a vet. You need to get it from a vet to make sure it's the "real thing" and the proper one for the size of the animal. And you can't really lump "powders and treatments like Frontline" into the same category.
