F-1 visa, currently on CPT, how to file?
    Hi,

I am currently on an F-1 visa and authorized to work at an internship on the CPT option.

I'm not sure exactly how to file my taxes: I'm not sure if I'm eligible to file as exempt in any instance. The tax specialist at my internship said -

"they suggested that you really file both federal & state as single and one. "

What do I do? If I am taxed for anything that I should be exempt for, I should be able to get that back right?

You are exempt from FICA taxes (Social Security and Medicare) on salary earned while on CPT. If they are withholding these taxes, ask your employer to stop and request that they refund any amounts already withheld.

You are NOT exempt from federal and state income taxes. You probably need to file as a non-resident alien, filing Form 1040NR-EZ or 1040NR.
