I recently pulled the cord on my ceiling fan to start the fan and the cord broke. There is no cord visible, it broke in the fan housing. Can the cord be fixed/re-attached? Would it be more practical to just buy a new fan?

Don't rush out and buy a new fan, it could just be the keychain that attaches to the switch or the switch itself that needs replacing. These are inexpensive items that aren't too difficult to replace. What model fan do you have?
You have to replace the pullchain switch assembly. Not hard if you follow the instructions:

Um, my first thought was to shut the fuse down... and try from there.
