    Filing taxes without spouse
    Hello,
I am presently filing my taxes with myspouswho has his own business, recently he has become very sluggish filing his taxes, which has become an issue in our relationship. This year I found out that he has tax liens and not to mention, we have 3 years of back taxes to pay. I am very upset concerning this matter because I am now a retire state worker and feel that I have been cheated. This business is family own, which I am not entitle to. I feel used that I have to pay others debt. My question is: now that I am retire, and although I owe taxes, could I file solo?

    Thank-you

Yes.. you can file solo, "marriage filing separate". This was always an option. I choose the option that is going to yield the highest tax return. I'm married and never filed marriage filing jointly. My wife and I file through a CPA.

You can also file jointly and claim status as the "innocent" spouse or the "injured" spouse, which should release the portion of the tax paid by you on the joint return.
