I just replaced the bathtub drain and in the drain kit it had a black rubber ring which I thought was to put on the underside of the tub and plumbers putty on the top side of the tub but now it leaks. Should the ring have gone on the top side of the tub with nothing underneath?

Believe you are right the rubber rung should have gone inside the tub...

This is probably not a good time to find the right way if the tub has been

I can still change it since I have not filled the hole in under the house yet. Does the plumbers putty harden to where it won't come off?

You installed the drain correctly. The rubber gasket goes under the drain while plumbers putty or silicon jel goes under the lip of the drain, Where does it leak from? The putty seal (Putty will remain soft for a long time, is not hard to remove and certainly doesn't need a propane torch to remove it) or something below the drain itself? I would unscrew the drain and recaulk under the lip. Sometimes the putty's spun out when you tighten the drain. Check it out. Good luck, Tom

I made sure the drain was tight and had plenty of plumbers putty and it still leaked. I finnally figured out that the leak was coming from the overfill. When I shut off the water it would run along the faucet , down the tub and behind the overfill then down the backside of the tub so that it looked as though it was leaking from the back of the tub when it actually was not. I took off the overfill and added a little bead of plumbers putty between the overfill and the tub and put it back together and now there is no leak. Thanks for all the help... Tim
