    Homo - means same, Homologous in science means things that are very similar.
    In organic chemisrt a homologous series is a set of chemicals with similar properties like a similar formula and properties. This is usually because they have the same functional group, for example a hydroxyl in alcohols.

    Ethanol is ethane with a hydrogen molecule replaced by a hydroxyl radical, you need to think and look at your notes to work out how to remove the hydroxyl. It is a dehydration reaction converting an alcohol to an alkene. Look this up and you will have your answer.
