    Exterior mounted TXV
Have a new central air system with the orfice type metering device. Per paperwork enclosed in evaporator, it says a TXV can be installed simply by removing the orfice and scwering on a TXV. I'm old school and have never seen an expansion valve located outside the conditioned space. Is this how they are doing it today.

On some units and on some they are still in the plenum

Usually they are mounted outside of the plenum with the control bulb going inside on the coil.

In car's, they have been done for years that way.

The new style coils have the TXV installed inside the coil case or right near the coil. The type you have does not braze in but has threads. They are called a Chatliff fitting. Becareful of the special blue gasket. If you loose it they are hard to find without buying a whole new valve.

Hard shut offs are used to help achieve the higher SEER rate. With a hard shut off the unit starts to produce cooling almost immediately. Hard start kit needed as well as a time delay for piston type compressors. They say scroll does not need the additional toys attached.
