Went to see the urologist don't think what he did was right
Ok so I have been having reoccuring UTIs for a while now 5 months and so I was sent to a urologist. I did not like him because he was very unprofessional and talked about my sex life like it was a joke even though it was the first time I met him. So I got a second referral for an appointment. I arrive at the office and all seems well. I meet the doctor and he is like 80 years old. He did not know his medical terminology and asked me if I had any sexual "you know in the abdomen" thing. At this point I guessed and asked if he meant an STD and he said yeah yeah that's it. So then I tell him I didn't like the other urologist because they were trying to do invasive things to me.

So then he says that he needs to do a physical exam. So I've been to 2 urologists and never have I ever had to have a physical exam. So I figure that he wants to feel my kidneys and tummy. I get into the room and he tells me to pull my pants to my knees and at this point I'm feeling uncomfortable because there is no nurse either. He has me lie back and I spread my legs. He says he needs to check for any abnormalities. This is where my concern comes in. He inserts his finger into my vagina, and feels around. Now don't get me wrong, but I'm pretty sure a urologist deals with your bladder, kidneys, and urethra and NOT the vagina. The next thing I know he is inserting these metal curved rods up my urethra. I have had many things done before but the pain I experienced from this was so unbelievable that I literally started crying. I had no warning, nor did I even know what he was doing. At the end, he again stuck his finger into my vagina and felt around and then told me to put on my pants. I literally could not walk after this, and was concerned. He told me it would go away after a day. I've been scouring the net to find the exam that he did but come up empty handed. Am I wrong in thinking that I have been violated? I feel terrible about what happened and am having trouble peeing and there is blood. Is this a normal procedure? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!

The vagina does not have anything to do with the bladder or the urinary tract, I don't think... he shouldn't have done that at all! You should call another urologist and ask them about it, and if they say that's uncalled for, which I bet it is, I would call an attorney! =(

The metal rods are used for a pap smear and when you are pregnant.
Even so it sounds like he did do stuff that he shouldn't have done for your exam.

Have you had to take a lot of antibiotics? People that take antibiotics usually end up with bladder infections because the antibiotics take out the essential bacteria as well as the bad.
Try taking probiotics OR acidophilus, and vitamin C with rosehips. You can get them at a health food store and eat garlic, yogurt, blueberries and drink cranberry juice.
Find a reputable doctor to go to for a third opinion and report your concerns of the other doctor.

I am so scared now... I should have listened to my gut, and have no idea why I did not. My fiancé works in a hospital, and I called him and he said that after I told him what happened, he felt like he was going to be sick. I don't know why I did not question it... I'm an idiot... now it will be pretty much my word against his.

Sorry but I have had a gynocological exam, and know what a speculum is, but these metal rods were little rods of metal that had a hook on it inserted into my urethra and not my vagina. He stuck his fingers in my Vagina, when it was my bladder that was having the issue. So that is why I am upset.

Our health expert is not online right now, so she may not see your question until tomorrow.

The first doctor sounds like he had bad bedside manors.
Probably trying to make light of the situation... sometimes that's not the best idea.
Sex can cause UTI's, but he should have been more professional.

The vagina, uterus, etc does have something to do with it if you have tumors pressing against your bladder - an exam would need to be done in order to rule that out.

You could be mistaken the metal rods for the scope used to look up into the urethra or something of the sort.
The device used for a PAP would never fit up the urethra.

I'll try to ease one of your worries,
I have had catheters inserted/removed before (less sever than what you had done) and every time there was bleeding and blood tinged urine.

I don't like the fact that a nurse was not present in the room at the time.
I thought that was standard procedure.

I know this whole situation is uncomfortable both mentally and physically, but try to calm down ( I know easier said than done) but it's not good for you to be stressing...

I'm so sorry for your worries right now.
Our health expert may know what procedure you had done and be able to make suggestions for what you should do.

    Please keep checking back

Thank you for the reply, I hope that they can give me a little bit more idea on what the procedure was as he had no explanations even when I asked him. He just showed me the metal rods and showed me the size and said I got this one in there this much and the other this much... it was not a scope... I think they were what they refer to a ureatha dialators that should be used with anesthetic. That is the only clue I can find on the net. It had no attached instrument, but basically looked like two metal rods with hooks on the end. I was in significant pain and crying... if it was a legit exam he should have walked me through it, and should have explained what he was going to do instead of making me experience that kind of pain without warning. I'm trying to stay calm the best I can

    Oh it just sounds awaful...
I wish you could find more info on it to ease your worries...
I've come across doctors that don't like to explain things.
Maybe it's because they've been doing it so long and they forget that we, the patients, have no idea... Maybe they feel that explaining stuff is novel
    Or perhaps they're burned out.
What ever the reason, it just shouldn't be.
I would definitely call another urologist or your primary doctor and speak to them tomorrow - before the weekend...
I wish you the best hun.

Okay, I read through briefly. Sorry, I'm tired been in hospital clinicals all day.

Now, the vagina does INDEED have something to do with the bladder as that is where your urethra is located.

Now, what concerns me is the terrible bedside manner you received. First of all the doctor should never tell you to pull your pants down and just do an exam. You should be unclothed and then robed properly to provide privacy.

Second, you should ALWAYS have a nurse present when an exam of such a sensitive area is being done. If a nurse is not present you request one or refuse the exam.

Now, there can be many reasons that he did this exam. He could have been checking for cysts or tumors that could be in/around the bladder or uterus that could be causing pressure on your bladder, yet not allowing it to empty completely. Urinary stasis (incomplete bladder emptying) can cause recurrent UTIs.

Unfortunately, I don't know about these rods. I wish I could help more in this aspect.

I do need to know, however, if you gave a urine specimen, if it was cultured, and were you put on antibiotics. Do you take the antibiotics for the entire length of the prescription, or do you stop taking them when the symptoms disappear?

Personally, and I don't know if you are in the states or not, but if you are, I believe this doctor needs to be reported to the medical board. What he did was unethical.

I did have the urine cultured back about 2 weeks ago, put on antibiotics for the last 5 months non-stop. Been on every antiobiotic imaginable. What concerned me about the actual first visit yesterday is that he was only interested in doing the physical exam. He did not ask for a urine specimen either. So if he was really looking to get to the bottom of things would he not have done that? The symptoms have not disappeared, every time I voiced my concern he would interrupt me with something else. I am in Canada, but think that we have similar laws to that of the US, so will look into reporting this doctor.

Yes, from what you said, he absolutely should be reported. Not only did he have a bad bedside manner, but his exam of you was totally unethical, and (here in the states) illegal.

I wish I could help you more regarding the actual exam and dilation of the urethra, but I am unfamiliar with this practice.
