    briggs and stratton run
I have a B&s 14.5 (42598x92a) on a Murray 42" riding lawn mower it was given to me the other day by a friend. It wouldn't run so I worked on it a little bit and got it running then it stopped.I figured the carb needed cleaning because it had set for awhile so I took it apart and cleaned it but I didn't see any fuel in the bowl. I changed the filter and the spark plug and the gas free flows out of the hose but doesn't seem to be going through the carb.(does not fill bowl) The soleniod on the bottom of the bowl only has one wire (a black one for ground) and the other is cut off. Is the other wire suppose to be there and if so where does it run to ? The engine runs if I dribble gas into the carb. Any help would be much appreciated.

OK I read some other questions people were asking and one was about the solenoid and the other wire is suppose to be a power supply so the solenoid goes in and out and I fixed that and the solenoid works. But it will only run for for a few minutes and it back fires a lot out of the muffler then it shuts off. Any idea on how to go about adjust the idle screw? 2nd question : what's the little black plastic thing next to the idle screw that will only turn 180 degrees?

Well I got it running I don't know how but it runs now with one small problem. IT RUNS AT FULL SPEED ALL THE TIME!! :D Its like the you can even turn the adjusting screw all the way in and it still runs at full speed. I really need help.:o :o :o

Best be checking the governor springs. There is a lever that is attached to a rod coming out of the engine block that has at least one spring if not more, that is the governor control arm. Start engine and see if you move it if it changes the rpms. If not it is the governor gone out, if it does change the rpms and you can get it down around idle speed, it is the springs or adjustment of the governor linkages out of whack.
As for the backfiring, it is probably water in the fuel. It could be the flywheel key sheared a little, but I am leaning toward water in the fuel.

Thanks for the response. I was out working on it this morning and I think I got it fixed. The rod coming off the carb for the throttle was bent just a little and wasn't letting the flap close all the way. I bent it up just a little so it would clear everything and the idle was good. I also took the carb off again earlier to see if anything was sticking and I didn't see anything so I figured it was something else. I ran it up and down the street a few times and the spitting and sputtering stop also. It runs and mows good. Not bad for free. Thanks MOWERMAN for your response.:D :D :D :D
