My toilet will not stop running after I flush it. I don't have the type with the float ball, so I don't know where to look to see how to fix it. I have the kind where the float is plastic and goes up around a tube. The water goes up above the overflow line and just very slowly trickles out. I don't see anywhere to take anything apart to fix this.

Sounds like you have a FluidMaster Ballcock,(see image). Let me show you how to adjust it.
The water level is set too high and reaches the top of the overflow pipe upon shut-off. This results in small amounts of water pouring into the overflow pipe, causing the valve to turn on to refill the tank.
Solution: Reset tank water to a lower level by using the water level adjustment clip (see illustration) located on the link of the valve. Squeeze the two sides of the metal clip together, then slide clip down the rod.

Thanks for the reply. I couldn't see the image you mentioned, but based on your post, I was able to figure out how to adjust to the correct water level. Unfortunately that didn't fix my problem. I've attached a link to a picture of my tank parts so that you can see it. Now I have the level set correctly, but my problem is not gone. I don't think I explained it well the first time. It almost stops when it gets to whatever level it's set at, but not quite. I still hear a slow stream of water (sounds more like air to me) and gradually, it takes a few minutes, the water level creeps above the top of the overflow pipe. I assume that something is leaking and needs replacing. I read about replacing the washers, but I can't figure out how to get this thing apart to try that.

The water level is adjusted in this set-up by turning the (cheap) white plastic screw that has the x as it's top in the attached picture. I've turned it to the point that it's almost no longer coming out of the bottom of the base and it does stop a hair below the water line. I don't know if it will come apart or break if I turn it any further.

You have a FluidMaster ballcock. There are metal clips on the wire the float can's on. Reset tank water to a lower level by using the water level adjustment clip located on the link of the valve. Squeeze the two sides of the metal clip together, then slide clip down the rod. Good luck, Tom
