Blue Heeler barking on leash at other dogs
I've been unsuccessful in training my blue heeler not to bark at other dogs when on the leash. This is a problem in the city because owners think she might fight or bite and other dogs often get defensive. Otherwise she is very well behaved and doesn't do this when off the leash & playing with other dogs. I read that techniques that work for other dogs don't necessarily work for blue heelers because they crave love and are extremely stubborn and strong willed. For instance, scolding to them is attention and can actually reinforce the behavior. The dog thinks, "Oh boy, when I do this she gets very excited." Does anyone know specific techniques that work for blue heelers in altering this behavior? Thanks for your help.

I think the current trend is toward more positive methods because they work better with most dogs, not just Blue Heelers. Negative methods may fail more quick with them. In most cases, if you are alert, you will notice approaching the other dog before your dog does. As soon as you see the other dog, begin talking to yours to have it focus on you. Use treats if you need to keep the focus on you.

Our daughter and her husband took in a Blue Heeler his brother couldn't manage. They were very successful using the same positive methods as with Labs. The dog is now doing very well for his parents.
