    Air Conditioning Return
I have separate heating (radiated baseboard) and air conditioning units in my home. The return for the air conditioning unit is on my second floor hall ceiling. During the winter (Northeast) the area around the return is colder, in fact, the whole second floor is usually colder the than the lower area. Is seems it should be the opposite.

Is it possible the return for the air conditioning unit is sucking the warm air up creating the coldness on the second floor? If so, how can I remedy the problem? Are there covers, etc.

    Thanks,

    Scott

You are very correct on your thoughts of where the heated air is going, and on the other hand, the cold air is dropping out of that return duct. Some people cover that return with a 1/2 inch of foam board painted to match your ceiling, mounted with a small screw in each corner to hold the board in place, or you can use other methods to mount the insulation board. They do make a few covers but I do not have the source to guide you to...

    tsa7man,

Thanks for the prompt response... I am in NY too (Westchester County). Your suggestion makes sense. Is there a special insulation foam I should use? Thanks again...

you can just go to your home centers, and purchase a sheet of 1/2 inch insulation board with the highest R value, such as Ultra R board with the alum. Foil covering ( which paints well) made by many mfg's, stay away from the bead board.
