Ive already turned in an application to a couple department stores- so now what do I do? My mom said I need to go in and ask if they've gone over it. However I'd like other peoples opinions on exactly what to say, sounding professional but letting them know Im sincerely interested in the job,

Give them about two weeks to review your application and then after that point if they still have not called, stop in, ask for the hiring manager. And shake their hand, introduce yourself and say, "Hi, I turned in an application for a job and would just like to check up on the status of that." Simple as that. It lets the employer know that you are sincerely interested. You are taking time out of your day, to come check in.
