Okay, "fair" enough question! (Pun intended!) :) I have been a teacher of music in schools, in my home and also have given public lectures/demonstrations on various aspects of music for many years.

Hi I am doing a Science Fair Project on if Music Volume Affects Concentration? Since you are into music can you tell me your thoughts by answering the Questions below?

1. Do you think music volume affects concentration? Explain. Yes. Loud music for me, makes it harder for me to think. On the other hand, music playing softly that is a kind of music that I like, might actually help my concentration depending on the activity that I am doing.

2. Do you think most people concentrate better with a certain volume of music? Some might. I find that I concentrate better on doing household chores or writing things if I have a kind of music that I like playing at a low volume.

3. Do you think they concentrate with a consistent volume rather than changing volume? I think that a constant, low level of volume is best. But, that is for me. It might not be that way with other people.

4. Do you think gender has to do with ability to concentrate on a certain volume of music? Not so much gender, I think. But, certainly age is a factor.

5. Do you think you personally have a persistent volume or no volume of music that helps you concentrate better than another? It doesn't really matter if I have music playing or not when I am trying to concentrate on doing something. But, the volume level for me personally, must be low. I do want to add, that my preferred type of music to listen to when I am trying to concentrate on something would be classical.

6. Do you have an idea of why music volume might affect your concentration patterns? As I said in my answer to your first question, "Loud music for me, makes it harder for me to think. On the other hand, music playing softly that is a kind of music that I like, might actually help my concentration depending on the activity that I am doing." Since you are now asking "why" I have to say that I don't know what processes are going on in the brain for when music is affecting concentration. Someone who is more science oriented might be able to help you out better as to "why."

Now, you have received the answers from a music person. You might also consider asking this question to people in other professions. Like, someone who works in a filling station garage - they might like to have music playing really loud when they do what they do. Or, someone who does some kind of sport for a living.

Another thing that you might consider asking, is what type of music people listen to and how they use it to concentrate and also how the type of music they are listening to affects their concentration in a bad way. I know that the type of music playing does affect my concentration.

You also might want to simplify your questions some for certain types of people, i.e. very young to very old, and ask them as to how they would answer the questions.

Here is another example for you: When I am trying to paint the outside or inside of a home, I find that I can't concentrate as well in doing that when I have loud Rock Music playing. I don't know why. It's just me...

Music affects people in many different ways. Some music doesn't sound good unless it is loud. The way some music is, it is just made to be played loud. Also, some types of music don't sound good if they are played loudly. They are made to be played softly.

If you have any other questions, please let me know. Perhaps others will come along to offer their suggestions to you and also answer the questions. I wish you well in your Science Fair Project!!!!

Do you think music volume affects concentration? Yes. If the music is to loud can at times block certain brain waves and interrupt the thinking process.

Do you think most people concentrate better with a certain volume of music? A low-mild volume is most appropriate.

Do you think they concentrate with a constent volume rather than changing volume? If the volume is changing, you are tuning yourself with the music, taking concentration away from whatever you are doing.

Do you think Gender has to do with ability to concentrate on a certain volume of music? Hrm, No idea really.

Do you think you personally have a persistent volume or no volume of music that helps you concentrate better than another? I think everyone can say a different volume in a small amount is more soothing.

Do you have an idea of why music volume might affect your concentration patterns? If it is to loud, it takes you off subject, the music overrides the thought process. To low, you have to almost concentrate to hear the music.
