I have a toilet that has the flushing system (guts) and flapper replaced with the kind with a straight plastic tube and a attached metal rod with a ball float on top of plastic tube is two screws one plastic the other a small brass screw.

My problem is :

1. you have to hold handle all the way down until right before everything emptys in toilet or won't compeletely flush.

2. I replaced old guts with (same stuff as installed before replaced) brand new stuff but the guts still does what old stuff/guts was doing when you flushed it - it makes a loud noise constantly - you can adjust plastic screw on top of tube except it stops making noise a few minutes then starts making noise again sounds like running water but is not running water(I think) PLEASE HELP!

If the water just swirls around and slowly goes down then I have one that most repair plumbers miss.. Look down at the bottom of the bowl. If there is a small hole, then that is a jet that starts the syphon action. If it's clogged the water will just swirl around and slowly go down leaving solids behind. Take your finger,(UGH! ) and run it around the inside of the opening. Over the years minerals build up and cut down on the syphon (flush) action. If it is rough or you feel build up, take a table knife and put a bend in it to get around the curve in the bowl and chip and scrap it clear. Next take a coathanger and clear out the holes around the rim. They start the swirling action. And last, check the water level in the tank. It should be 1/2" below the top of the over flow tube. And speaking of the overflow tube, Make sure the small 1/8" tube from the ballcock to the white overflow tube is connected so it discharges in it and that it's flowing when the ballcock fills. This is what raises the water level in the bowl. For a good solid flush they all have to work together.

Try this. The next time it makes a noise go to the angle stop under the tank and began to turn it counterclockwise until the noise stops. Let me know, Tom

Spdball thank you - I chkd the hole everything was OK I just think the house is so old-anyhow the toilet still makes a loud hissing sound constantly but when I tried to tighten the btm screw it would stop a few seconds and start again it is so loud I can't sleep! I took the ball off and tried to adjust the metal rod attached to it weird but it worked a few minutes then went back to hissing I don't have a shutoff from wall to toilet I have to turn off from between house and city meter/where they have their shutoff valve... should I replace everything again? How do I get water out of tank if I do replace? Is it hard to do? What will I need? (a man w/ plumbing experience... lol jj ) single and desperate for a good nites sleep... thanks farida

The hissing sound could be caused by a small pebble lodged in the ball cock or supply. Try this Have a friend turn off the house while you remove the three screws on top and pull the float ball and washer assemble up and away. Now place a pan over the top of the ballcock and have your friend turn the water back on for a minute to flush out both the supply and valve. Reassemble everything and let me know. Good luck, Tom
