    Breaking a Lease-Maine
    Hello;

    I have recently (in August of 2007, it is now October) signed a one year lease on an apartment. The apartment is in great shape, the landlord has always promptly responded to my requests, I have no problem there. However, I have just been informed that I'm being laid off my lucrative job, and job prospects are dim. Jobs in my field typically pay about half what I'm making now, so I don't see a possibility for continuing to pay the rent that I am now. I have family that I can live with, but I would need to break my lease. Any suggestions on how to do this without ruining my credit or getting sued? I live in Maine.

    Hello:

    Give notice. Clean the place. Do a walkthrough with the landlord. Pay the rent until they find somebody. According to landlord tenant law, you're going to be responsible for that.

    That's what you'll have to do if you were sued, so do it on your own and you won't get sued. This will save your credit too.
