    OPT and taxes
    Hi!
I just started working under Optical Practical Training. My employer is deducting social security and medicare taxes. I have heard that I am not supposed to pay those while I am under F-1 visa. Where do I find information about that to show my employer so I could stop being taxed and get those taxes back? Thank you very much in advance!
    Regards,

You are correct in that you should NOT be paying these taxes UNLESS you entered the U.S. on your F-1 visa beofre 2002.

Download IRS Pub 519 for 2006 (latest pub available) and check out page 48. That should convince your employer.

If not, have him email me at the email address below.
