    SS/Medicare Refund
    Hi

I have been working on F1 - OPT for the past 9 months. Though I told my employer that I am not required to pay SS/ Medicare they are being deducted from my pay. What is the procedure to get the SS/medicare taxes back when I file the taxes for this year.

    Thank you

First and foremost, you should try to get the Social Security and Medicare taxes refunded from your employer. If they refuse to do so, get their refusal in writing (you will need it when you file with the IRS).

To get the refund from the IRS, you must file Form 843.

Download IRS Pub 519 from www.irs.gov. It contains all the details as to how to request a refund of Social Security and Medicare taxes.
