Shower won't work unless Hot/Cold faucets in sink are on
My upstairs bathroom water isn't working right. The toilet tank won't fill and the shower will not work, the cold water also doesn't work. If the hot / cold is turned on in the sink the toilet tank fills and you can get hot water only out of the shower. How do I resolve a problem such as this?

Has this situation been ongoing since day one or did it just start? Have you had any work done lately? Are the only fixtures affected the kitchen and the upstairs bath? Back to you. Tom

It happened around the beginning of the year. It was very cold outside sub zero. At first it would be "burping" out dirty colored water, it's city water line. Then a day or two later the water in toilet stopped filling and the shower would not work at all. The cold in the sink doesn't work but must be on in order for tank and shower to work. The hot also has to be on and the toilet tank fills with hot water and the shower is only hot. Haven't had any work done, but two pipes in the basement did break. They were fixed with compression fittings. The only thing affected is the upstairs bath. The rest of the water supply in the house is working just fine.

The first thing I would do is open up the affected fixtures and flush out the branch and supplies. It sure sounds like dirt got sucked into your system and are clogging up the faucets and toilet ballcock. After you're through flushing out the lines get back to me with the results. Tom
