    visa waiver overstayer
Hi, I am a british citizen who entered the states on a visa waiver in October 2001. I have overstayed, and have been in the states ever since,I have been here for 6 years now.
How can I get legal in the u.s ?
I have not in any trouble with the law since I have been here.
My only friends and shelter are here in New York, and to go back to my country would be of great hardship, no place to stay or money.
Also, my british passport expires the end of this month, can I still renew it in Washington, despite my status ?
Thank you, any advice is appreciated.

You can have your passport renewed at the British Embassy despite your legal status in US.

Regarding your immigration status, since you have overstayed for years, you're not eligible to obtain student visa or employment visa. The only option is getting married to US citizen.

You can get legal by applying for a student visa, finding a job where your employer is willing to sponsor you so you could get your working visa, or getting married to an American citizen. I'd recommend the student visa. And you can renew your passport in Washington D.C, If they ask you about your status you can always tell them that you are applying for your student or working visa!
