:o I am an american living in Britain. Earlier this year before April 1, I had a new visa put in my passport. This is what it says: type: multi. settlement wife. KOL required. code 1. I was told by my solititor whom I'm not sure I trust, that I could take the KOL test this next march-april. I should add that in January I will have lived here for 6 years. This is the second time Ive lived in the UK. What does all this mean? And if I take the test and pass what will that mean? Will I be a citizen of the Uk or will I then have permanent residency. Not to be rude but if you are immigrating to the UK you should know all this. The KOL test is a test that demonstrates you knowloedge of British languange and customs. It is required if you want to get a permamanent resident status, once you pass the test you can apply for ILR Indefinite leave to remain, basically you never have to leave the country but are not yet a citizen.

Why would you not trust the solicitor (I assume this is like an immigration lawyer or advisor)? I would sit down with him/her and ask them to detail the steps towards becoming a UK citizen in your case as knowledge of immigration requirements may be asked of you in the KOL test.
