My border collie won't eat any of his dog food but he'll eat our "people food". He is WAY underweight and he lost it in like less then a month. It was very sudden, and now he's basically skin and bones. Just recently his eyes have started to get blood in them. The bottom of his eyes are filled with blood and his eyes changed from ice blue to a yellow color. He's losing his vision. And his poop is runny and "mucus-y", its really slimey and runny. His nose is also dry a lot and his nose is full of boogers.. which isn't normal. I've been giving him worm medicine but I'm not sure if it will work. My family is scared to bring him to the vet cause we don't want them to put him to sleep. Can someone explain all this to me?

Maybe what you are doing is killing your dog... maybe someone is poisioning your dog.

At any rate, he must go to a vet immediately if he has any change to live.

He certainly has some serious problems, and likely not worms. It may or may not be something the vet can diagnose and cure. I certainly can't diagnose and cure it, and neither can anybody else on the net. If it is hopeless, the quick merciful end at the hands of the vet will be the kindest thing you can do.

I am not a vet. But, the rapid weight loss & yellowing of the eyes suggest to me that his liver and/or pancreas is not functioning correctly. Those are things that you cannot get a quick remedy for online. Without knowing exactly what is going on, deworming him is unproductive and could create additional problems. Whatever is happening, I can guarantee you that your dog is very uncomfortable. If you or any member of your family was exhibiting these symptoms, there wouldn't be any hesitation to get yourselves to a doctor. Why is your family hesitating doing this for your dog? I am assuming he is old. Your family's avoidance is putting your dog at risk for unnecessary pain and suffering. What you are all doing is inhumane. Please get him to a vet immediately.

PLEASE don't think we don't love our dog. I thought it was worms, and my family was scared that taking him to vet would mean that the vet would tell us we need to put him to sleep. And we weren't ready for that. Im actually PISSED off that my parents didn't take him in because I'm sure he could have been saved but now I'm not sure. We are bringing him in tomorrow and I hope that they can do something. But I'm worried that its too late... I really kind of hate myself for taking so long to bring him to the vet. He just seems to get worse day by day. Today he can't see, and I'm not sure if it's a permanent one or what... im really hoping not. And if he is now a blind dog... do any of you know if a dog can be a "functioning dog" even if he's blind? My dog now can't see(that just happened today) and he keeps running into walls and stuff(obviously because he can't see) and I'm wondering if say he is bling forever... do you think he can get used to it and function like a normal dog? I really do pray every night that he gets better.

Dogs can temporarily lose vision from high pressure in their eyes. If the problem is treated promptly, and responds to the treatment, the vision may return. Some of my friends went through having their dogs go blind a few year ago. The dogs are still doing OK. Just hope for the best at the vet tomorrow. Sometime it is just something a course of antibiotics can clear up.

Unfortunately everyone, my dog had to be put to sleep yesterday. I guess he was just too sick. I blame myself but I hope he's in a better place. Ill never forget him and my home will not be complete with out him.

Everybody will be sorry to hear that. I am glad you had the strength to let us know. I hope I didn't give you too much false hope with my last post. I have seen some dramatic turnarounds with dogs. I hate to tell what we went through when my friends' dogs were losing their sight. One day the pressure was down and the dog could see, the next, he was running into things again. It was very hard for the couple that not only had one puppy, but the mother too.

Don't beat yourself up over this. You did the best thing you knew giving him the worm medicine you thought he needed and feeding him what he would eat. I have gone through some bad times with my puppies. My litter mate to the ones that went blind, had gotten loose gotten killed. Another time I had my new puppy with me working on a fence for her, and I dropped a board on her head. She lived, but lost an eye. It really helped me a few months later when I saw the Lion King at the Imax. At the end, the wise old ape tells Simba not to feel guilty about his father getting killed.

All the symptoms you describe, especially the yellow eyes point to liver failure, which can be due to toxins, cancer, infection and the portal caval syndrome from heartworms. I see you live in Florida. Is the dog on heartworm preventative? Most dogs not on heartworm preventative in Florida will eventually get heartworms. Your dog is dying, get him to a Veterinarian.

While I agree it is important to read the whole thread, I would like to have seen a little more patience with a new member and their first answer.
