I just bought a 1989 Accord and the first day it ran fine. Now it idles well when cold, but as soon as the engine warms up and you take your foot off the gas, (when slowing down), it stalls. Our local garage charged me $180 but could not fix the problem. We've now increased the revs, but the engine misses going uphill and of course uses more gas. The previous owner replaced the carburetor, wiring (plug cables I think) and I replaced plugs - the garage re-gapped plugs. Can anyone give another possible solution?

Thanks for your quick reply. My mechanic says that replacing the ICM will only work if the car stalls when driving down the road, and would not solve our problem of stalling when slowing down at stop signs or lights. He wants to replace the carb again, but I know this has been done within the last year. I don't want to just start replacing parts mainly because I cannot afford it and also because there is no guarantee that this will fix the problem. Do you think replacing ICM will help stalling after slowing down for a light? Thanks again

. I recommend replacing the ICM and coil every 120,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first. If you plan on keeping the car, I would recommend replacing it. Another option is to remove the ICM and coil and take them to AutoZone for testing. AZO won't charge for this.

. I would also replace the fuel filter, which can affect performance at any speed. It can get so clogged, that it will kill the engine. This could be what's happening to you. Here's how to replace it yourself:

. I would check the oxygen sensor, since it affects fuel injector duration under constantly changing conditions. It may be that once your car warms up and the oxygen sensor is out of "open loop" mode the car dies. This would indicate a problem with the sensor. Here's how to do the job yourself:
