Hi, I'm 22 and am trying to grow a beard.

I've got sideburns and the hair on my chin and 'tache grows quite well. However on the side of my face its not quite the same.

Along the bottom of my face on the sides, hair grows, and there is a sort of thin patch going from roughly my sideburns to my face, but nothing in between.

Its not all that thick. Is there any way I can encourage growth? Or is it just a matter of time before it goes all over? If I shave the area everyday will that help?

Yes, it is a "matter of time"... but maybe more. Not all men will have thick hair growth in all beard and mustache areas.

I'm 41, and grow a beard once a year. Only 3-4 years ago did it finally start filling the voids at the bottom of my cheeks near the chin line.

Also - and related somewhat: Until about 5 years ago I had about 10 lonesome hairs in the middle of my chest. Now I have a small patch of them. Long but not thick at all.

So you work with what you've got. If you want to grow it, then maybe look for sideburn-goatee combos that you like... one's that don't use the spaces you're missing.

Hi Lee. I agree with Rick. My beard growth seems to mirror yours in that I am able to grow very little on the sides of my face. With me, it is even a bit patchy along the jawline on one side. I am 35, and it has only been in recent years that some of the finer hairs covering the sides of my face have begun to thicken. Shaving will likely help to a minor degree, but it will take time. Unless your beard grows unusually slow or there is some other reason to believe you may have lower testosterone production, it is likely simply a matter of heredity. I agree, try and find a style you enjoy that works with what you have.

My dad can grow a beard fine, and he has hair growth fine all over.

Keep shaving the area where you eventually want to grow the beard.
Maybe, in time, it will start growing much more.

Making it thicker and darker by shaving is an old wives tale. The fact when you need to start shaving it gets thicker and darker in merely a coincidence. I'm 25 and have good coverage all over, which only happened pretty recently, but my goatee is light and sides and under my chin is dark. I have a white background. I'm 23 year old , I haven't had complete beard groowth yet

I am 6 years old and I have the same problem of uneven beard growth on my face.
Beard growth started when I was 3 and a half years old and till now it is unevenly growing.

Suggest some helpful remedy please.

I know its 2012, but for anyone that still looks at this thread, there is a solution that you might want to hear.

At an early age, when the skin is still young, the short hairs are very sensitive to any stimulation. Will shaving help? Probably not. What you can do, is physically stimulate the hairs with your hands. May sound idiotic but its true. Ever wonder why facial hair looks the way it does on an old mans face? Its because he pulls it that way. Pull your beard the way you want it to grow, even if you don't have one. If you are missing a certain spot, play with that spot with your fingers or thumb while rubbing your hand along your face. Also remember to wash your beard, even washing the tiny hairs can have a huge growth effect.

Now its 2013 and I was thinking the same thing, when I saw my uneven beard, it grows more on the front sides of my chin, and that's the place where I have rubbed and scratched it the most, so now I'm gnna rub it all over my face.
