Odd rough-in configuration for Shower / Tub
    Hello,
    Plumbing newbiwe here...
I am finishing a basement bathroom where the builder (1987) roughed-in the plumbing. However, some of the dims don't match anything that I have read about on this forum or in any book. The lav and toilet are in and work, but the shower or tub...

There are (2) 2" cast iron pipes for the shower/tub. (I presume shower because there is no dap square, though the builders original plans show a tub). Both pipes are 14.5" off one foundation wall, and 8" apart. The pipe that is closest to the nearest perpendicular foundation wall (i'll call it pipe #1) is a 2" stub with a rubber cap hose-clamped in place, and is 57" off that wall. Pipe #2 (65" off the nearest perpendicular wall) has black PVC drain pipe okumed (is that a word?) into the cast iron portion, runs up to the bottom of the floor joist above, and is connected to the vent for the lav. Pipe #2 also has a clean-out 12" above the slab.
How do I attach a tub or shower to these?
    Thanks in advance...

Are you sure if you tapped around pipe#1 that you wouldn't find a tub dap-out that's covered over with a thin layer of skim cement? The measures on #1 are correct for a tub rough in. Pipe #2 sounds like a lavatory drain and vent. You have options here. You may install a tub or they make a shower base to fit the tub rough in that you have. Your choice! Good luck, Tom

    Tom,
Thanks for the speedy resonse. I beat the floor around #1 with a 4 lb hammer and got nothing. The tone of the hammer strike was the same as in other areas of the floor.

"The measures on #1 are correct for a tub rough in."

Question: how would a 30" x 60" tub fit #1 if #1 is 14.5" off the close (concrete foundation)wall and 57" off the far wall? Would I do some creative PVC drian work to make things fit (as opposed to using one of those pre-fab overflow / drain kits)? Since #2 is only 65" off the far wall, I suppose I could turn the framing studs 90 degress so they are flat against the foundation.
Either way, I think that I'll have to bust out some concrete to attach the new drain work to the existing cast iron rough-in - - unless I elevate the tub or shower pan.
    Thanks,

The reason I said #1 sounds like a tub rough is that a tub rough goes like this. All measures are to the center of the stub-up. 1 1/2" off the front plate or 58 1/2" off the back wall . 15 1/2" off the side wall and the overall enclosure would fit a 60" tub. You shouldn't have to elevate anything. What do you wish to install? A tub or a shower? Regards, Tom

I'd rather install a tub, but, to the center of stub #1, I'm 57" off the far concrete foundation wall and 16" (I measured again at the floor) off the side concrete foundation wall. The front plate is not in yet.
Could I leave the cap on #1 and tap into #2?
Is it possible that #1 was meant for the tub drain and #2 for the overflow? Those dims might work.
