The discharge lasts about 3 weeks tapering off to a slight mucus. Their behavior becomes more extreme weeks before the bleeding starts. Then they will make strenuous, creative efforts to escape. The risk of being bred starts the middle of the second week of discharge. Once loose, getting bred is minor compared to some of the other things that can happen to a dog running loose. Unplanned breeding or even a bath or swim can cause expensive to cure, if not fatal infections. Avoid either until the swelling is all down, perhaps taking close to another month. I hope you are planning to spay her rather than breed her. Spaying prevents many cancers later. Having her spayed will make life easier for both her and you. Besides reducing behavior problems, it eliminates the hassle of her seasons. If you have any thoughts of breeding her, I hope you will read over the material at Woodhaven Labradors Articles
Also keep in mind that unspayed females can get breast and uterine cancer. Besides I think they have nicer dispositions, as they are not dealing with the hormone issues. I say Spay is the Way!
