    Worm medication
My husband and I recently purchased a puppy from a farm. Last night I noticed something white in his stool. My husband informed me that the dog had worms. I called my vet to try to ge the dog in there sooner because of the issue. The office is closed on the weekends. So I went out and bought Hartz Rid Worm Liquid. It does not tell me how often I should give it to him until we can get to the vet. Does anyone know? If so please help me.

HHHMMMMM... That doesn't make a whole lot of sense for the package not to say. I know that the vet usually prescribes strongid dewormer that is administered every two weeks. Just to be safe, I'd only give it to him once, if at all, until you can get to the vet after the weekend. If you do give it to him, be sure to tell your vet so she can instruct you on what to do.

I would not give that to my pup. You do not know what type of worms he has. There are several types. It may be yucky to know your dog has worms but it being a puppy you would be better off waiting till Monday. If this pup has worms it really needs to be checked out to make sure it is healthy, other than the worms. It may need shots as well. We have seen a lot of posters on here with puppies that have contracted parvo. It is safer to get a check up for your puppy. Good Luck

They may not feel it needs a repeated dose. I agree, one dose and ask the vet. I never give such worm medicine. My puppies come wormed, and I put them on Heart Gard+.

Perhaps none at all. RubyPitbull has much more real world experience than me. She doesn't like OTC wormers for puppies. Same with some other experienced people. As disgusting as worms are, they won't kill you puppy by Monday. The wormer could.

The Hartz products that I would never use on my dog are to get rid of Ticks & Fleas. Those products have been known to cause bad reactions in dogs. I can't speak from personal experience with regard to the Advanced Care Rid Worm Liquid for dogs & puppies. BUT, that product only deals with two types of worms - hookworms & roundworms. I can pretty much guarantee that if you bought the pup from a farm, he has a tapeworm which is caused by ingesting an infected flea. So, I would suggest that if you can't get a hold of a vet for the weekend, you hold off giving the puppy anything until you can get him in on Monday. To put a puppy through a treatment that might not fix the problem isn't good. The less chemicals the better. You really need the vet to determine what types of worms, parasites, and any other health problems that your pup has so he is given the proper course of treatment. As disgusting as worms are, as others here state, your pup will survive the weekend. Just try to work on housebreaking him this weekend and get him to defecate outside as much as possible. Immediately clean up any poop he may drop indoors. Watch him and make sure he doesn't eat his own feces, which a lot of pups have a tendency to do.

Ruby's answer makes a lot of sense as usual. I want to add 2 things. Some worms can spread to you or more commonly, children. Everybody should wash their hands carefully after any contact with feces. I do have experience with housebreaking and other aspects on new puppy care. I am much better at avoiding problems than fixing them. Much of what I have learned from 17 puppies and my training is in the sticky starting at https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/dogs/i...tml#post251802 Work on that and leave the worms for the vet next week.
