Hi, I have a 10 yr old cat that I took to the vet and he had me give my cat revolution to treat fleas. This was about 3 weeks ago. Yesterday I felt a huge lump on the back of his neck where the treatment was given. I would have thought I would have noticed this lump before now but I didn't. I also have 2 kittens and one of them tries wresling with him all the time and its kind of rough so Im thinking maybe a huge knot in his muscle maybe. It feels very deep and is almost the size of a ping pong ball. It doesent seem to hurt a lot but it sure feels like it should. Has anyone else had a reaction like this in their cat from using revolution? Or can this be a huge muscle knot? Im trying not to think about it being a tumor and also can't imagine it coming on so fast. I pet my cat all the time and I think I would have noticed it before now.. Any ideas?

That is pretty strange. Being that the revolution was administered 3 weeks ago, it doesn't seem logical that it would be the cause. However, I can't be 100% sure. I've never used revolution, however labman, our dog expert, uses it on his dogs. If he wanders over to the cat forum, he'll be able to better tell you about his experience with it. It could be that your kitties were rough housing and he got a good bite on his neck. I've got 2 puppies, 5 and 6 months old, and they got to wrestling one day and Brandy whacked her hip into a doorjam. She had a knot the size of a small tennis ball. Just like your cat, it didn't seem to hurt her at all. In fact I'm not sure she even knew it was there. It went away in about a week by itself. I'd at least give your vet a call and see if they want him to come in and get it checked out.

I forgot to mention he also got a lukemia shot that day, that couldn't of given him a tumor could it? Isn't that shot kind of giving him lukemia? Now Im really scared.

Ah, it very well could be a reaction to the vaccine or the needle may have poked him the wrong way that caused it to knot up. Has he had the vaccine before or is this his first ever? When you say leukemia shot, you are referring to the yearly vaccine to protect against feline leukemia and distemper and things of that nature right? I've got 2 cats myself, 13 and 3, and they were a bit swollen when I had them microchipped, but that faded within a few hours. Call your vet, better safe than sorry in case he is reacting badly to the actual vaccine, especially if this is his first one.

Oh I forgot to mention, the vaccine would not have given kitty a tumor. Worst case scenario, he's having a bad reaction to the vaccine, in which he would need to get to the vet.

Yes the first I remember, but it had to come on almost over night because I'm sure
I would have noticed it before now. I don't think the kitten could bite hard enough to cause something this big. Im going to try to get enough money together to take him to the vet.. I just want to try all I can first just in case it's a muscle knot, should I try a heating pad or something you think?

Sure a heating pad can't hurt. If you can get him to sit still and keep it on there. Other than the lump, he acting fine right? Eating? Pooping? If he seems fine otherwise, just call the vet. A phone call is free. Explain what's going on and they should be able to give you some better advice over the phone. Did he jerk around or tense up and get pissy when he got it? I'm willing to bet it's just a sore muscle from the needle.

If your kitten bit/scratch him. It could be an abcess. If it is, it will erupt. He may need an antibiotic if this is the case. I have an older cat and if he gets bitten this happens. Pull back the hair rub your finger over it you shuld be able to feel a small puncture wound in the lump if that is what it is. The only reaction to flea products that mine has had is thinning hair at the site.

The vet told me that this is common and to wait until the middle of the week and if its still there , then bring him in, so we will see. Thanks for the imput

Hey thanks for the update! I'm glad the vet didn't seem too alarmed. That's a good sign. Hopefully it will go away quickly!

Well update,, I took my cat into the vet this morning and after first feeling the lump he said that there are 2 reactions that usually concern them, one being an infection ,which are usually not a big deal, the other being a sarcoma. He said that after feeling it, he is concerned that it may be a sarcoma.. He then took stormy's temp and it was 1 point higher then normal ,which he said he was hoping for because that would tend to be more infection. So he put him on antibiotics for 10 days and said he wants to see it half the size or it was more then likely a tumor from the vaccine. If that's the case he will have to have surgery which will be a radical surgery because of how much they will have to cut out. Im so upset that the vet did not tell me of the possible reactions before giving him this vaccine because my cat is an inside cat and 10 yrs old. If I had known, I wouldn't of had him do it. If he doesn't have the surgery, it will kill him. I also read that vets aren't even giving that and 2 other vaccines in the scruffs of cats necks anymore,, wonder if this is the reason why. I will keep you updated on the results in 10 days.. Thanks

Oh and I was re-reading this post and correction, yes the feline lukemea vaccine can give the cat a tumor. The vet said no one knew for sure why some cats have this reaction. In fact he said in some areas , the numbers are high. He said he has only seen it twice since he became a vet

So sorry about Stormy. Thanks for keeping us updated. I really hope that the antibiotics solve the problem. Thanks for the info on the feline leukemia vaccine by the way. I have heard that sometimes it can cause a bad reaction in some cats, but I've never heard of it causing a tumor. That's interesting to know. Please don't beat yourself up over this... you were doing the right thing in giving him the vaccine. You had no way of knowing something like this would happen. I really hope all goes well for you two.
