I no nothing of mechanics and my mopeds back brake is sticking. It won't release and so I can only drive 5-10mph. I don't want to have to drive my car to campus for gas reasons, so how do I fix it?

Exactly what down there is sticking? Since I no not of what type of brakes it uses, if its mechanically operated, something down there may be sticking due to maybe rust, dirt, etc. or it needs adjustement.

I'm not really sure, it's just a brake pad like on a bicycle. I can't see it though because I don't know where it is. I've tried looking for it but I just don't know where to start. When I pulll on the brake, it will slow down, but when I try to speed up a gain it won't release, so I'm assuming it's something close to the pads.

Really haven't worked on a moped at all, go over your linkage while its not running, may have something hanging it up, trash, rust, dirt, or whatever it uses to release the brakes don't work. Spring etc.

How much travel is on the handle is it loose? You may have to tighten or loosen up the brake cable. It may just be too tight. Now if its hard to brake then you might end up having to lubricate the cable. A little grease inside the cable shroud would allow it to move more fluidly. Get a haynes manual it will tell you (albeit generically) how to do it.

Saying how this started would also help.

If it was happening since you got the bike, then who know's what happened to it. But if the bike was sitting around for a year unused, then perhaps rust or something else is causing brakes to stick.

Give us a little background.

Also, I can relate this problem to one Honda CRX hand brake problems I experienced. The car wouldn't release the brakes, once I released the hand brake lever. A little spring that would squeeze the brake pads got so rusted that I had to smack it with a hammer a few times so that it would release the brakes. It's been working fine ever since.

I originally thought it was because of the cold weather, but at the beginning of the week it high 80's here in Iowa, so I know that's not it. It just slowly happened. It's stick but just a little, Eventually it would stick and I would just pull out the hand lever, but now that doesn't even work.

What's a Haynes Manual and where do I find one?

First of all what kind of Moped is it what year is it. This would help and I can give you some ideas of what to look for. Here is a list of places to look. www.haynes.com they sell all sorts of repair manuals online. And depending on what brand I could direct you to a number of websites that actually have service manuals in pdf format available for free downloads.

It's a yamaha 98' JOG

A Clymer or Haynes manual is what you need. It will take me a couple of days to find one online for free, but you could call your local (or as local as possible) Yamaha or motorcycle dealer and get a service manual. I believe that they are available at any auto parts house or can be ordered from them.
