Hello to the both of you:

Yes, yes, and YES... I have one, and if they'll give ME one, they'll give ANY felon one.

The passport application doesn't ask about convictions.

As said, yes, but you might be refused entry into the country you want to visit. Be sure to contact their embassy in the US to make sure they will allow people with felonies to enter.

Not to be contrary, Lowtax, but if it isn't on the passport, how is the other country going to know?

I do remember filling out some piece of paper when I traveled to Germany a couple of years ago, but don't remember what it said. Perhaps it asked about felonies...

Well between Canada and the US there is a shared computer system that will pull up anyone's police records instantly when their passport is scanned or name is entered. As I never worked in/with customs people in Europe I don't know if they have the same instant access but it's possible.

They ran my passport through something, but if the application doesn't ask about convictions, there won't be anything there, I'm guessing.

When I came back and the passport was swiped I was asked about a previous passport that I had reported lost. So, there is something there - I just wonder what information and from where it is getting pulled.

I don't have the issue the OP is talking about, but curious as to what is there.

What they (Canadian and US border guards) can see, regardless if your from the US or Canada is your name, DOB, home address, car registration, drivers license number, and a whole lot more including as were discussing here, criminal records. They can basically see anything entered about you in any computer system the government runs. Most of the time a flag will pop up with anything unusual but in most cases they take a quick glance and wave you through.

But as mentionned before I am unaware how much or how fluidly they share this information with Europe.

    Hello again:

Another intriguing piece of the puzzle is that new passports issued since sometime in 2006 (I think October) contain an RFID chip. With this chip in your pocket, as you pass through the border, your records will automatically and wirelessly be brought up before the border agent. He won't even have to push any buttons or swipe anything.

Exactly WHAT information they have on their computer is probably highly secret, and if I knew I couldn't tell you cause Bush'll throw me into Gitmo. However, given the jillions of dollars Homeland Jerkity has, I'll bet they know the color of your underpants.

Do our allies in Europe have access to this information?? I would certainly think so. Can any of these countries keep anybody out they want? I would again think so.

Is it fair? Is it right? Is it legal? Do I like it? --- Those are questions for another thread.
