I just moved into an apartment, and there is this hampton bay fan in the bedroom that was installed by a previous tenant. For the life of me I can't find a way to turn on the lights! When I flick the switch at the wall the fan goes, but not the lights - all the bulbs are fine. I wondered if this might need a remote or something, but I can't find a model number, and can't find one that is similar looking on the web. It is 5 fin, in a antiqey brassish colour, but the fins are white plasticc or something, it has 4 directional, positionable 60watt lamps. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be so happy!

I suppose the landlord is taking the position that he is not responsible for junk the last tenant installed?

Open the thing up and see what, if anything the lights are connected to. If it is a circuit board, likely it should have a remote. Could be it is a model designed to be switched at the wall. If the apartment wasn't wired up with 3 wires from the switch, it wouldn't work that way. If so, you could try to find a remote kit that fits it. You could also connect both the light and fan to the feed wires, and then add a pull chain switch for each. Just drill a hole in the housing where the wires are, screw one in, and connect the wires.

Easier way to look at it: Are there any pull chains on the fan or light? If so, either the fan does NOT have a remote, or the remote was added on later and can be removed. If there are none, then it is a remote only fan and you will need to buy a replacement remote to use the fan.

If it is the former option, the easiest thing would be to wire it without the remote receiver. The remote receiver would be in the ceiling canopy. Here are wiring instructions:
