Hiya. I've posted this on a couple of other forums, but I still can't find a soloution. Maybe you guys can help?

This is what happens: When I start the computer, everything looks OK. If I go to "my computer", I see both my DVD and my CD writer listed, complete with contents. Any programs that need CD info are fine, and I can access things fine.

The problem is when I want to change discs. If I replace a disc, the new one is recognised as a blank cd, and XP wants to write to it. I can't access anything on it, and prgrams don't pick it up as being in the drive. This happens every time, with the exception that in some cases, if the original cd is re-inserted, it picks it up fine.

As you can guess, this is very frustrating. It means I can't change disc any time (without a reboot) - not when playing a game, not when finished with a game, not even during a 3-CD install (which is, of course, now impossible)

Has anyone got any idea what's going on?

1) maybe you switch before closing the explorer on the CD/DVD rom drives, and going back to another drive first, sometimes windows acts silly if you don't do that.

2) you can place your games on a 'virtual drive' so that you will not need the CD to play it if you have enough storage space on your HDD.

3) try a system recovery to a date when you did not have this problem. Maybe your drivers are just a little messed up.

Also, personally I don't use the XP cd writing program, I use Nero. I don't like the way windows XP makes you feel like a kid who does not know what to do on your own and the CD /DVD writing program sucks.

Interesting. Is this problem on both your CD and DVD drive or just one drive? Also if you can give us the make/model of the drives that may help (if you know them).

Also can you open RegEdit (Start >> Run >> Type "Regedit" >> Hit OK) and go to the following folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\Cdrom\ . Do you have an "AutoRun" key on the right side? If so, what's its value?

Thanks for the quick replys. Yes, it effects both drives.

the DVD drive is an LG, and is listed in device managaer as "HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8161B" and the CD drive is "RW-241040", but I don't remember the make.

The autorun key is present, and has the value of: 0x00000001 (1)

I hate to be a pain, but I'm bumping this up as I haven't gotten any replys yet!

Don't give up yet. Try computerforums.org. They have some pretty good people there too. I just love both forums and get a lot of help from both. Nothing is unfixable! Try it, you might like it.

See I told you not to give up, I sent you problem to the computerfurum.org and got the following back:

Cut off your cordless phones and if there is a microwave around, unplug it. They send waves out on the same spectrum as the wireless disrupting the interaction causing interference.

This is help from computerforum.org. I asked some friends for help and got quick replies.

Update the firmware as step one, then try keeping the distance down to minimum. You can adjust the distance from the command line with telnet or use the web interface.

Hope this helped. There's one more, telling you to turn off wireless phones and microwave, they interfere, Anything is worth a try. Good Luck.

Sounds like this could be caused by faulty drivers/software built into XP. Try running the following (have your XP cd ready)

Start -> Run -> type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes) & press enter.

This will probably ask you for your XP Cdrom.

The program scans your system files and repairs any that were corrupted or the wrong versions. When the program finishes you don't get an error report, to see what happened you have to go to event viewer: right click my computer, click manage the open event viewer and then open the system log. In here it will be under "windows file protection", there's an entry for starting and stopping the scan so if there's more than two entries there its probably fixed a file or two.
