I received a figure from the opposing ins. co. for a settlement in my car accident case. My attorney and I are negotiating this figure. What can happen now-could I wind up getting less?

Several things, first normally if they give you a figurer, you now give them a higher figure, and they come back with another figure somewhere between, and you come back with another number and so on, till you find one you can agree with.
But if you do not accept their offer, they are free to withdraw it and not offer anything and go to court. This normally does not happen, but they do have this right.
You should be asking your attorney these questions. If he isn't answering them to your satisfaction, get a new attorney.
Trust your attorney on this, not their attorney. I agree with sideoutshu on this one, If your lawyer does not seem to be working in your best interests find a new one before you proceed.
